OpenSpecimen-OpenClinica Integration at FIND Diagnostics (Geneva)

FIND is a global non-profit organization driving innovation in the development and delivery of diagnostics to combat major diseases affecting the world’s poorest populations. FIND’s Biobank has been using OpenSpecimen since 2017 to manage collections from countries across Africa and Asia, and store specimens in a central biorepository in the USA.

FIND uses OpenClinica as their EDC system to collect clinical data. However, the use of two systems to enter data was error-prone and time-consuming. Further, querying data across the two systems is critical to find specimens of interest. An API based integration between OpenClinica and OpenSpecimen was implemented to solve issues faced by the end-users.

Anna Mantsoki and Stefano Ongarello from FIND Diagnostics (Geneva) presented a poster on “OpenSpecimen and OpenClinica integration” at ISBER 2018.

Configuration

The configuration of the integration plugin includes:

  1. Projects mapping: Map OpenSpecimen’s Collection Protocols with OpenClinica’s Projects, including map visit calendar.
  2. Field mapping: Configure mapping between OpenClinica CRFs with OpenSpecimen Participants and Visits
  3. Schedule Frequency: Configure the frequency of how often the job should run. E.g., minutely (real-time), nightly, etc.

Benefits

The benefits of integrating a biobanking LIMS with EDC like OpenClinica or REDCap are:

  1. Reduce manual data entry
  2. Reduce human errors
  3. Improve productivity
  4. Create powerful queries with data across the two systems
