Scientists propose lunar biorepository as ‘backup’ for life on Earth

Abstract: Scientists have suggested creating a special storage facility on the moon to keep preserved samples of Earth’s important and endangered species. This “Lunar Biorepository” would protect these samples from disasters like climate change, wars, or other events on Earth that could destroy them.

The moon’s cold environment and permanent shadows in some areas would naturally keep the samples frozen, without requiring power or human intervention. This way, cells could remain alive and be used in the future to help revive species that might otherwise go extinct.

Although building this will be difficult and expensive, the idea is to have a safe backup to protect Earth’s biodiversity, alongside efforts to save species in the wild.
