Enhancing Digital Maturity in Italian Biobanks: The BB4FAIR Framework

Abstract: The BB4FAIR framework, developed by BBMRI.it, offers a standardized and quantitative approach to assessing the digital maturity of biobanks in line with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. Piloted across 46 Italian biobanks, the tool evaluates digital infrastructure, data annotation richness, and the presence of dedicated IT personnel. Results revealed significant variability, while many biobanks had adequate IT systems and staffing, data annotation and digital consent management were notably lacking. Nearly all still rely on paper forms for informed consent, highlighting the need for further digital transformation in key operational areas.

The study emphasizes that digitalization is essential for enabling reproducible biomedical research and integrating biobanks with national and European health data systems. BB4FAIR also provides an automated R/Shiny tool for real-time scoring and visualization, helping institutions track their progress and prioritize corrective actions. This initiative supports broader efforts such as the “Strengthening BBMRI.it” project and can be adapted across the BBMRI-ERIC network and other healthcare research infrastructures. By fostering standardization and digital readiness, BB4FAIR marks a critical step toward modern, interoperable biobank ecosystems.
