Biobanking the Future: Preserving Endangered UAE Species at the Museum of the Future

Abstract: The Museum of the Future in Dubai is set to host a unique biobank aimed at preserving the genetic material of endangered species across the UAE. Developed in collaboration with Colossal Biosciences, the initiative focuses on safeguarding living biodiversity rather than attempting to resurrect extinct animals. By collecting and storing cells and tissues from threatened species, the biobank creates a long-term genetic backup that could support conservation, research, and future restoration efforts.

While Colossal is widely known for its ambitious de-extinction projects, the company emphasizes that species preservation now forms the majority of its work. The planned Life and Biodiversity Laboratory will combine public education with active scientific research, highlighting how biobanking and gene-editing technologies can help maintain genetic diversity and strengthen ecosystems. As global biodiversity faces accelerating loss, this initiative positions biobanks as practical tools for conservation, connecting science, policy, and public awareness under one roof.
