										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><b>Abstract:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Abu Dhabi has officially inaugurated its cutting-edge Biobank in Masdar City, a facility being hailed as the &#8220;missing link&#8221; in the UAE’s journey toward precision medicine. This isn&#8217;t just a storage center; it’s a massive biological library with a capacity for five million human samples, including DNA, stem cells, and umbilical cord blood. By digitizing these samples, the facility allows researchers to study the root causes of diseases within the local population. The goal is to shift the entire healthcare system from a reactive model that treats people after they get sick to a preventive model that identifies health risks years before they occur.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the most practical applications already underway is the tumor biobank, which analyzes cancer patterns specifically in the Emirati population. By understanding why certain tumors appear in this region, scientists can develop tailored therapies that are more effective than standard global treatments. Supported by the Emirati Genome Programme, which has already collected over 800,000 samples, this initiative bridges the gap between massive data collection and real-world clinical impact. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><b>Abstract: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">For a long time, genetic research has mostly focused on people of European descent, leaving a massive gap in our understanding of global health. The <a href="https://www.uclahealth.org/precision-health/programs/atlas-precision-health-biobank">UCLA ATLAS Biobank</a> is bridging this divide by studying one of the world’s most diverse populations in Los Angeles. By analyzing the DNA of nearly 94,000 participants from 36 different ancestry groups, researchers have moved beyond small lab findings to real-world medical insights. This diversity allows scientists to see genetic links to diseases that were previously invisible, ensuring that the future of personalized healthcare includes everyone, regardless of their background.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the most exciting breakthroughs from this study is the ability to predict how a patient will respond to weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. Researchers identified a specific gene, PTPRU, that influences how effective these treatments are based on a person&#8217;s genetic makeup. This means that instead of a trial-and-error approach to prescribing medicine, doctors may soon use biobank data to choose the right drug for the right patient from day one. By connecting electronic health records with diverse genetic data, the ATLAS project is turning biobanking into a roadmap for more accurate and fair medical treatments.</span></p>

By studying over 12,000 volunteers, researchers are building a reference genome that helps doctors distinguish normal local diversity from actual disease-causing mutations. This work is the essential first step toward personalized medicine, ensuring that healthcare in Cyprus is based on the island&#8217;s own DNA rather than a one-size-fits-all global average.</span></p>

With over 1,300 participants enrolled across 77 sites, the initiative is focused on collecting longitudinal biospecimens to better understand treatment response and drug resistance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlike traditional biobanks, this initiative collects blood and tumor samples at multiple stages of a patient’s treatment journey. This longitudinal approach enables researchers to track how tumors evolve and why certain therapies lose effectiveness.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Launched in 2020, the biobank supports patients undergoing targeted therapies, treatments designed to act on specific genetic mutations.
