Australia Launches National Biobank for Bone Marrow Failure Research

Abstract: Australia has taken a major step forward in rare disease research with the launch of the Australian Marrow Failure Biobank (AMFB) at Monash University. This purpose-built biobank will support cutting-edge research into Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes (BMFS), which affect young people with life-threatening consequences. By integrating biospecimens with clinical data from the national AAR registry, the AMFB aims to uncover the causes of these conditions and support the development of new therapies.

The initiative is led by experts from Monash University’s biobanking, and clinical research programs and reflects years of national collaboration and planning. With early support from advocacy groups like Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, the AMFB is now a nationally coordinated, open-access biobank, serving as a central hub for researchers and clinicians across Australia to accelerate discoveries in BMFS.
