										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="c-teaser">The Assembly of Members of the Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium (<a href="https://www.bbmri-eric.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBMRI-ERIC</a>) appointed Professor Jens K. Habermann as the new Director-General. The distinguished scientist, clinician and recognized expert in biobanking, translational cancer research, and human genetics will take office in Graz on September 1st, 2020. He succeeds Erik Steinfelder who served as Director-General of BBMRI-ERIC from August 2017 to January 2020.</p>

<p>Prof. Habermann is currently President of <a href="https://esbb.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESBB</a> (European, Middle Eastern &amp; African Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking) and holds three positions at the <a href="https://www.uni-luebeck.de/en/university/university.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Lübeck</a> and the <a href="https://www.uksh.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein</a>: he is Head of the Interdisciplinary Center for Biobanking-Lübeck, Head of the Section for Translational Surgical Oncology and Biobanking, and he works clinically as a specialist in human genetics.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The microbiome research field is rapidly evolving, but the required biobanking infrastructure is currently fragmented and not prepared for the biobanking of microbiomes. The rapid advancement of technologies requires an urgent assessment of how biobanks can underpin research by preserving microbiome samples and their functional potential.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">A team of scientists, led by </span><a style="font-size: 16px;" href="https://www.cabi.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CABI</a><span style="font-size: 16px;">’s Dr. Matthew Ryan, have outlined a series of challenges and opportunities presented in a necessary review of how microbiomes – biological communities including bacteria, archaea, fungi, algae, protists, and viruses – can be ‘banked’ and preserved for generations to come. </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">The researchers, who call for a prioritized list of what should be conserved from a scientific, economic, social, and environmental perspective, </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">present their views in the</span><span style="font-size: 16px;"> journal</span> <a style="font-size: 16px;" href="https://www.cell.com/trends/microbiology/fulltext/S0966-842X(20)30188-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trends in Microbiology</a><span style="font-size: 16px;">.</span></p>

The Molecular Medicine Research Center (MMRC), now known as <a href="https://biobank.cy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CY-Biobank</a> is the first research center of UCY. It aims at developing front-line research on human genetic diseases and genomics, and offer better prospects for diagnosis, prevention, and therapy, in the framework of precision medicine. </span></p>
